Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister disputes NCIC funding claims
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has accused the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) of dishonesty regarding the funding for the Divali Nagar celebrations. The Prime Minister stated that the NCIC applied for and is set to receive $500,000 from the Ministry of Culture, while simultaneously seeking financial support from various state enterprises. She characterized this practice of seeking multiple sources of state funding for the same event as “swine behaviour” and expressed intent to close such loopholes.
The NCIC responded by inviting the Prime Minister to the finale of the Divali Nagar festival, which marks its 40th anniversary. The organization denied claims that its board had accused the government of political victimization by withholding funds. However, the NCIC acknowledged it should have more closely monitored and corrected public narratives regarding its financial situation.
The controversy follows the recent resignations of three board members, including director Dr. Shane Mohammed. While Mohammed rejected claims that the Prime Minister had halted funding for 2026, reports indicate that several major corporate sponsors, such as Caribbean Airlines and First Citizens, have also withdrawn support.
