Trinidad and Tobago sees 15% drop in serious crime in 2026

Prime Minister Kamla Persad‑Bissessar announced that serious crime incidents in Trinidad and Tobago fell by 15% during the January‑July period of 2026, dropping from 6,469 cases in the same period of 2025 to 5,514. The figure is also 1,217 incidents lower than the comparable period in 2024. The biggest reductions were recorded in the Northern Division (‑32%), followed by the North Eastern Division (‑30%) and the Eastern and Central Divisions (both ‑22%).

The prime minister linked the decline to the ongoing State of Emergency, noting that the decrease in serious crimes and the lower-than‑projected murder count demonstrate steady progress by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the government’s anti‑crime efforts, while acknowledging that further work remains to improve public safety.
