Trinidad and Tobago to adopt India's UPI technology

Trinidad and Tobago is set to become the first Caribbean nation to implement India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The initiative is being developed through a partnership between the National Payments Corporation of India International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.

High Commissioner Chandradath Singh announced the move during a Republic Day event, noting that the UPI system aims to establish a real-time, efficient digital payment ecosystem. This collaboration reflects India’s increasing international involvement in providing digital public infrastructure.

The technological integration follows a recent visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Trinidad and Tobago, which resulted in the signing of six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade, investment, and technical collaboration. The move also highlights the 64-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
