Trinidad and Tobago to implement $250 monthly social assistance increase

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services has reaffirmed that recipients of Senior Citizens’, Disability, and Public Assistance grants will receive a promised $250 monthly increase in the new year. Minister Vandana Mohit stated during a parliamentary committee meeting that there will be no delays in these payments.

The increase, which was part of the 2027 budget, is intended to provide a cushion against the cost of living for approximately 165,000 citizens, including 124,000 pensioners. The Senior Citizens’ Grant will rise from $3,500 to $3,750.

While the government moves forward with the adjustments, concerns have been raised regarding the protection of these funds. Data indicates that financial abuse is a significant issue for the elderly, with reports of relatives or caregivers seizing grant income. Additionally, there are security risks for recipients when withdrawing cash from ATMs or post offices.
