Trinidad and Tobago to release 563 emergency detainees in phases

Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have initiated a phased release of 563 detainees held under State of Emergency (SoE) and Preventive Detention Orders (PDOs). The release process is scheduled to occur in batches over a six-day period in east Trinidad, as the current SoE is set to expire on September 17.

Phase one, running from September 10 to 12, primarily involves approximately 300 low-risk detainees. Higher-risk individuals are expected to be released in subsequent phases next week. Security officials stated the phased approach is intended to prevent security resources from being overwhelmed while ensuring a safe and efficient transition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Suzette Martin, confirmed that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has made operational preparations to maintain public safety. The TTPS plans to increase police visibility and conduct targeted operations to disrupt gang activity and illegal firearms in specific areas. While the revocation of a detention order does not automatically trigger police action, the TTPS noted that individuals under active investigation will continue to be pursued according to the law.
