Trinity College Dublin researchers identify mechanism for cancer cell survival

Scientists at Trinity College Dublin have identified a mechanism involving “zombie cells” that allow certain tumors to survive chemotherapy. These cancer cells remain latent in the body and can reactivate over time, leading to tumor recurrence and progression in recovered patients.

The research reveals that instead of succumbing to treatment, some tumor cells manipulate the immune system to their advantage. By recruiting components of the body’s own defense system, these cells turn potential immunological enemies into involuntary allies to ensure their survival. This discovery provides insight into why some tumors reappear with increased strength following chemotherapy cycles.

These findings open new avenues for therapeutic strategies, including the development of drugs designed to block the factors that allow tumors to recruit immune cells and to counteract this adaptive process.
