Tripoli faces environmental crisis as landfill reaches capacity
Activists, unionists, and local leaders held a protest near the Abu Ali River in Tripoli, Lebanon, to denounce a growing environmental and health crisis caused by the Tripoli landfill reaching its full capacity.
Shadi El Sayed, head of the Union of Workers and Employees in North Lebanon, stated that the city is facing a “real environmental and health disaster” as waste accumulates in the streets of Al Fayhaa cities. He criticized the Al Fayhaa Municipalities Union for failing to manage the waste issue and questioned the government's delay in addressing the crisis.
Protesters expressed concern that upcoming rains could worsen the situation and noted that local residents in areas like Serar are refusing to host more waste. Samir El Haj, head of local committees, described the government's current responses as “morphine injections,” arguing they are merely temporary fixes that fail to address the root of the problem.
