Trippie Redd criticizes labels for pushing artists with “small ceiling”

Rapper Trippie Redd has criticized the current state of the music industry, accusing record labels of promoting artists with a “small ceiling” who lack broad, cross-generational appeal.

In recent social media posts, the Canton, Ohio, native argued that labels are attempting to manufacture stars by heavily pushing new signees in the style of successful artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Juice WRLD, and XXXTentacion. Redd claimed this strategy fails because the new artists lack the substance and reach of his peers, noting that while his era's music could be played by all, much of today's music is merely “all turn up, drink, pop a pill, no meaning.”

Redd also expressed regret for his own role in the genre's evolution, describing his past contributions as “fast food hipster music.” He suggested that the industry is currently filled with “wannabes doing the same music” and criticized the shift in how success is measured through streaming and sales, which he believes makes established acts appear larger while making emerging artists seem smaller.
