Tripura: Mob attacks BSF personnel near India-Bangladesh border

A violent confrontation occurred on November 2 near the Ashabari Border Outpost in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, leaving three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel injured. The incident began when BSF personnel from the 49th Battalion detained a man, identified as Hefzur Rahman, on suspicion of smuggling.

Following the detention, a crowd of villagers reportedly blocked the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road. The situation escalated into a physical assault where the mob, armed with sticks and bamboo, attacked a BSF vehicle. During the clash, attackers allegedly attempted to snatch service weapons from the personnel and vandalized a government vehicle. The injured, including Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar, were transported to a local health centre for treatment.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the assault as “unacceptable” and “a matter of grave concern,” directing authorities to ensure strict legal action. Police have arrested between eight and nine individuals, including three women, in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the clash.
