Himanta Biswa Sarma sworn in for second term as Assam chief minister

On 12 May, Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath for a second term as chief minister of Assam in Guwahati. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders and several chief ministers from other Indian states, including Delhi’s Rekha Gupta and Uttarakhand’s Pushkar Singh Dhammi. Security was heightened around the venue, and supporters gathered at the hotel hosting the event.

The swearing‑in follows the BJP’s decisive victory in the Assam assembly election, which the party also celebrated in West Bengal and Puducherry. Tripura chief minister Manik Saha, who arrived earlier, highlighted the importance of regional security and the role of the new government in addressing cross‑border issues.

The new Assam ministry includes four additional ministers, and the event is being portrayed as a continuation of development initiatives undertaken during Sarma’s first term.
