Tripura insurgent groups launch 72-hour statewide bandh

Seven surrendered insurgent groups in Tripura have launched a 72-hour statewide bandh and highway blockade to demand the implementation of a tripartite peace accord. The movement, involving groups such as the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), began on September 4.

The protesters have presented an 11-point charter of demands to authorities. Key requirements include the immediate implementation of the peace accord, protection for former cadres, the withdrawal of police cases against returnees, and the filling of ST backlog vacancies. The groups are also seeking safeguards for Tiprasa land, a separate administration, and the transfer of land acquisition rights to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Protesters have blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway and parts of railway routes, setting tyres ablaze and bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. Security has been increased in affected areas, including Baramura and Khowai Chowmuhani, as police and administrative officials monitor the situation and attempt to restore traffic.
