Tripura prepares for Village Committee elections amid political talks

Village Committee elections for 70 committees across eight blocks in Tripura’s South District are scheduled for September 28. District Magistrate Mohammed Sajad P announced that 1,15,355 voters, including 58,170 men and 57,185 women, will participate across 177 polling stations. Nomination papers must be submitted by September 8, with scrutiny on September 9 and withdrawals permitted until September 11. Voting will take place from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM on September 28, with vote counting starting on October 5.

In preparation for these elections in the tribal areas, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The meeting, which also included Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma and BJP Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, was described by Saha as “fruitful and constructive.” The discussions follow previous negotiations regarding electoral alliances between the BJP and its ally, the TMP, specifically concerning the implementation of the tripartite agreement and indigenous land rights.
