TÜRK-İŞ President condemns fatal workplace incidents in Turkey

Ergün Atalay, President of TÜRK-İŞ, has condemned a series of recent workplace incidents in Turkey, labeling them as “work murders” rather than mere accidents. He attributed the fatalities and injuries to negligence, profit-seeking, and a lack of oversight.

Recent incidents include a mine collapse in Soma, Manisa, which resulted in five deaths, and a collapse at an illegally operated mine in Kilimli, Zonguldak, claiming one life. Additionally, an explosion at a metal factory in Torbalı, İzmir, left seven workers injured.

Atalay emphasized that occupational health and safety must not be treated as a cost-saving measure. He called for stricter inspections, the full fulfillment of legal obligations by employers, and severe punishment for those responsible for negligence.
