Türk Kızılay stem cell donor pool exceeds 1.2 million
Türk Kızılay has announced that the number of active stem cell donor candidates in the TÜRKÖK project has exceeded 1.25 million. According to Türk Kızılay President Prof. Dr. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz, the pool reached 1,251,677 candidates, with 39,631 new donors joining in the first eight months of the year. The donor base is composed of 63% men and 37% women.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the TÜRKÖK project manages donor acquisition, matching, transplant planning, and the safe transport of cellular products. Stem cell transplants are critical for treating leukemia, lymphoma, various cancers, and genetic metabolic disorders.
In separate blood donation efforts, Arbel employees in Mersin donated 434 units of blood, and a Kızılay blood donation truck in Yozgat collected 884 units since September 1. Additionally, LÖSEV President Dr. Üstün Ezer called on the Ministry of Health to allow LÖSEV to participate in the national donor banking system through a proposed 'KİTBANK' initiative to further expand donor availability.
