Republic of Cyprus receives COP31 invitation after diplomatic tension with Turkey

The Republic of Cyprus has received an invitation to participate in the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference, scheduled to be held in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9 to November 20. This development follows a period of diplomatic tension between Ankara and the European Union.

Reports indicate that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously sent personal invitations for the summit's leadership meeting on November 11–12 to 26 EU member states but excluded Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis. This exclusion prompted significant diplomatic intervention from European Union officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.

Nicosia attributes the successful receipt of the invitation to coordinated diplomatic efforts by the Cypriot government and sustained pressure from EU institutions and member states. While the invitation has been received, it remains unconfirmed whether it constitutes a personal invitation from President Erdoğan or if President Christodoulidis will attend the summit.
