Turkey could meet 85 percent of energy demand with electricity

An analysis by energy think tank Ember indicates that Turkey could increase the share of electricity in its total final energy consumption from the current 22 percent to as high as 85 percent using existing technologies.

According to the report, which was released ahead of the COP31 UN climate conference in Antalya, Turkey’s current electrification rate of 22 percent is close to the global average of 23 percent and the European Union level. While the country has increased the share of solar and wind power in electricity generation from 4.5 percent to 22 percent over the last decade, the report notes that the pace of electrification must accelerate significantly to meet global targets.

The study suggests that with current technology, 96 percent of transport, 58 percent of industry, and nearly all building energy needs could be transitioned to electricity. Such a shift could reduce energy imports and strengthen energy security. However, the report highlights that while electricity demand has grown sevenfold since 1990, the share of fossil fuels in final energy consumption has remained constant.
