Türkiye food waste reaches 102kg per person annually

Food waste in Türkiye is an escalating issue. According to estimates from the UNEP Food Waste Index, annual household food waste has reached approximately 8.7 million tons, or 102 kilograms per person. This is an increase from previous estimates of 7.76 million tons (93 kilograms per person).

To combat this, initiatives like the platform Tüketilir are working to redirect surplus stock and products nearing their expiration dates to alternative sales channels. The company aims to connect producers, distributors, and retailers with consumers to prevent food from losing its economic value due to packaging changes, export issues, or canceled orders. Tüketilir plans to expand its supply network across different regions of Türkiye and implement ESG reporting to measure its environmental and social impact.
