Türkiye leads global Cittaslow slow cities network
Türkiye has emerged as a leading country in the global Cittaslow movement, also known as the “slow cities” network. With 29 member cities, Türkiye holds the top position in the number of locations participating in this international initiative.
Created in Italy in 1999 as an extension of the Slow Food philosophy, Cittaslow aims to improve quality of life by promoting local production, environmental protection, and the preservation of cultural and historical heritage. The movement encourages sustainable development, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and the maintenance of traditional cuisine and local customs.
The Turkish Cittaslow cities are spread across diverse geographic regions, including the Aegean coast, the Black Sea, and various lake districts. For example, in the Aegean region, towns like Seferihisar—the first slow city in Türkiye—are noted for their organic markets and citrus orchards. Other areas feature ancient ruins, such as Teos, and offer unique experiences ranging from coastal fishing villages to mountain settlements and eco-tourism opportunities.
