Türkiye reports disappearance of major security threats on Syrian border

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yilmaz, stated that major security threats along the Turkish-Syrian border have been eliminated following the transition to a new administration in Syria. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Yilmaz noted that since December 8, 2024, four strategic security issues—human smuggling, drug trafficking, uncontrolled migration, and terrorism—have suddenly disappeared along the border.

Yilmaz emphasized the importance of bilateral relations, citing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s principle that “Syria’s security is Türkiye’s security.” He highlighted the potential for increased military and maritime cooperation, pointing to a recent visit by Turkish naval vessels to Latakia Port as a concrete sign of future collaboration. Türkiye has expressed readiness to support the Syrian army with training, equipment, and logistical needs.
