Türkoğlu farmers use amplifiers to protect millet from birds

In the Türkoğlu district of Kahramanmaraş, farmers are employing large amplifier sound systems to protect millet crops from sparrows. In the Sağlık Ovası region, where approximately 1,500 decares of millet are cultivated, producers face a challenging 40-day period once the heads form to prevent birds from consuming the harvest.

Farmers have previously attempted to deter birds using scarecrows, sirens, motorcycles, and drones, but found that birds eventually become accustomed to these methods. This year, the use of high-volume amplifiers has shown positive results. Local farmer Cemal Gemci noted that while millet is easy to grow due to its low water and fertilizer requirements, protecting the yield from birds is difficult. Gemci expressed plans to experiment with helium-filled gas balloons in future seasons to create moving visual deterrents.
