Trần Dụ Tông and the unusual ant tribute in Vietnamese history

Historical records from the Trần Dynasty detail a unique event during the reign of Emperor Trần Dụ Tông (1336–1369), where the court received an unusual tribute from Champa: an ant reportedly measuring 1 foot and 9 inches in length.

Trần Dụ Tông, the seventh emperor of the dynasty, ascended the throne at age five. While his early reign saw contributions to the court, historical accounts, including the ‘Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư’, note that he later became increasingly preoccupied with luxury and entertainment. This period was marked by a decline in governance, characterized by the king participating in gambling within the palace and hosting lavish banquets, despite strict laws prohibiting such activities. These behaviors are cited by historians as factors that contributed to the eventual weakening of the Trần Dynasty.
