Trnava restores historic Emmer Villa and uncovers unique architectural details

The city of Trnava has completed the extensive restoration of the Emmer Villa, the oldest preserved summer house in the city. Built around 1770, the national cultural monument is being returned to public use following years of deterioration.

During the restoration process, which began in autumn 2024, experts discovered unique historical elements hidden for decades. These include a unique painting in the southwest salon featuring a shading motif inspired by antique structures, which city officials state has no equivalent in Slovakia and reflects the style of Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Additionally, traces of valuable Rococo stucco decoration were preserved in the lower hall.

The renovation addressed critical structural issues, including waterproofing, the historical timber frame, roofing, windows, and engineering networks. Following the revitalization of the adjacent Ružový Park in 2023, this project completes the renewal of the historical area.

Scheduled to reopen in September, the villa will host a cafe and cultural-educational spaces. The city intends for the site to be a living space for residents rather than a closed monument. Public tours are scheduled for late August to allow citizens to view the renovated interiors.
