TRNC to launch Product Safety and Metrology Laboratory
Olgun Amcaoğlu, the Minister of Economy and Energy, announced that the Product Safety and Metrology Laboratory will begin operations by the end of the month. This facility represents a significant shift in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from document-based inspections to technical, hands-on testing.
The laboratory will initially operate with five specialized departments: Length, Toys, Electricity, Chemicals, and Metrology. It is designed to verify whether imported or locally produced goods comply with safety standards regarding human health, property safety, and consumer rights. Specific testing will include electrical safety, toy risks for children, and chemical substance limits.
The metrology department will focus on the reliability of measurement tools used in trade, such as scales, and provide device calibration services. Amcaoğlu noted that the project aims to align the TRNC's product safety infrastructure with European Union technical regulations and strengthen cooperation protocols with Turkey.
