Troina Carabinieri arrest woman for scamming elderly victim

Carabinieri officers in Troina, Italy, have arrested a woman accused of executing a “Carabinieri scam” against an elderly woman in her eighties. The suspect allegedly contacted the victim by phone, impersonating a member of the Carabinieri to claim a relative was involved in a fictitious traffic accident.

The suspect convinced the victim to hand over approximately 18,000 euros in cash to avoid legal consequences for the relative. However, through an operational strategy coordinated by the Enna Provincial Command, officers intercepted the woman at the victim's private residence while she was still in possession of the stolen cash. The money has been recovered and returned to the victim.

The Nuovo Sindacato Carabinieri (NSC) of Enna praised the intervention and the cooperation between the Carabinieri and the Judiciary. While celebrating the arrest, the NSC also highlighted ongoing concerns regarding personnel shortages within the force, calling for increased staffing to maintain effective prevention and territorial control.
