Trojmezí Pond Restoration to Protect Endangered Freshwater Mussels
The Czech town of Hranice and the German town of Rögnitzlosau have launched the cross‑border “Together for Water and Climate” project. It targets water retention in both the surrounding landscape and the urban area, and includes a public‑education programme for schools.
A central element is the restoration and de‑sedimentation of Trojmezí pond, which hosts the critically endangered river mussel (perlorodka říční). Mayor Daniel Mašlár said, “Na našich tocích, v Hranicích na několika místech, se vyskytuje kriticky chráněný živočich, perlorodka říční.” Work is set to begin in autumn 2023 with completion expected by the end of 2027. The Czech side will invest about 30 million CZK, 85 % of which comes from the EU Interreg cross‑border programme and state subsidies, and will add a new dam, walkways, green spaces and an educational centre. The German partner will focus on restoring nearby wetlands to improve habitat conditions for protected species.
