Troll field expansion begins gas production in the North Sea
Production has officially commenced on the Troll Phase 3 Stage 2 subsea project in the North Sea. This expansion accelerates the extraction of 55 billion standard cubic metres of gas from the Troll West reservoir, a volume equivalent to nearly two years of gas demand in France.
The project began ahead of schedule and several hundred million Norwegian kroner below the original NOK 12.3 billion cost estimate. Equinor attributed these efficiencies to a drilling campaign that was completed 25 per cent faster than planned.
The Troll field holds approximately 40 per cent of the gas reserves on the Norwegian continental shelf and supplies about 10 per cent of Europe's total gas demand. The field is operated by a partnership including Equinor, Petoro, Shell, TotalEnergies, and ConocoPhillips.
