Troms educators call for school prioritization ahead of 2027 elections
The Norwegian Teachers' Union (Utdanningsforbundet) is urging local politicians in Troms to prioritize education ahead of the upcoming county council and municipal elections scheduled for September 13, 2027. The union emphasizes that effective school policy requires qualified teachers, manageable class sizes, and accessible local schools to ensure both social welfare and economic profitability.
Addressing regional challenges, the union highlights that approximately 3,000 individuals between the ages of 20 and 29 in Troms are currently outside of employment and education. They argue that schools play a central role in reducing social exclusion through early integration and close follow-up to prevent dropout rates.
While acknowledging that increased funding would improve services, the union stresses that politicians must make responsible choices and clear priorities within existing economic constraints, rather than relying on unrealistic expectations.
