Troms Kraft warns of power shortages north of Ofoten

Erling Dalberg, CEO of Troms Kraft, has highlighted a critical energy crisis in the region north of Ofoten in Norway. While Northern Norway as a whole reports a power surplus, significant geographic disparities exist. The area north of Ofoten faces a tight power balance, limited reservoir capacity, and weak grid transmission capacity.

Statnett has warned of an unacceptably high risk of a total grid collapse in this region. Consequently, limits on responsible consumption growth have been lowered, and the ability to reserve new capacity has been halted. This has created a Catch-22 situation: businesses see low prices and a general surplus but lack grid access, while power developers receive signals that the region has sufficient power, discouraging new investment.

Dalberg argues that expanding the grid alone is insufficient. To ensure regional stability, value creation, and preparedness, increased local power production is essential. This includes a need for more energy through the year and improved efficiency, suggesting that the synergy between wind and hydropower is a necessary component for the region's development.
