Tron prepares for post-quantum mainnet activation after Nile testnet success
Tron has announced that its post-quantum cryptography (PQC) capabilities are ready for mainnet deployment following successful testing on its Nile testnet. Founder Justin Sun stated on October 10, 2026, that the network can transition to quantum-resistant digital signatures at any time, pending approvals from Tron’s governance bodies.
The upgrade, implemented via Committee Proposal No. 20628 and the GreatVoyage-v4. 8. 2-PQ1-build1 release, introduces two NIST-standardized signature algorithms: FN-DSA-512 (based on Falcon-512) and ML-DSA-44 (based on Dilithium). These signatures impact transaction signing, block production, peer-to-peer node handshakes, and smart contract verification within the Tron Virtual Machine.
While the technology is currently opt-in and confined to the testnet, the mainnet activation is now projected for the end of 2026. The move aims to protect the blockchain against future threats posed by high-powered quantum computers and Shor’s algorithm. Currently, the new FN-DSA-512 signatures are larger, at approximately 667 bytes, compared to the legacy ECDSA signatures used by the network.
