Tropea alcohol takeaway ban upheld by Calabria administrative court
The TAR Calabria has rejected a request to suspend a municipal ordinance in Tropea that prohibits the nighttime takeaway sale of alcoholic beverages in the historic center. The president of the First Section ruled that the protection of public order outweighs the interests raised in the appeal for a precautionary measure.
Tropea Mayor Giovanni Macrì expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating that the ordinance is not intended to target merchants or social life, but rather to combat uncontrolled and itinerant alcohol consumption in streets, squares, and public viewpoints. The measure allows for the normal consumption of drinks within licensed establishments and authorized spaces after 10:30 PM.
Macrì emphasized that the regulation seeks a balance by limiting only takeaway sales within a specific timeframe and area to manage issues such as waste, crowding, and noise, without inhibiting overall entrepreneurial activity.
