Tropea celebrates the feast of the Madonna di Romania

The feast of the Madonna di Romania is celebrated twice annually in Tropea. The March 27 observance commemorates the Virgin Mary’s protection of the city during the 1638 earthquake.

The September 9 celebration marks the solemn coronation of the sacred Icon in 1877 by Bishop Filippo De Simone. According to tradition, De Simone made a vow to crown the Icon with a gold crown after being kidnapped by brigands while traveling through Sila. Following his release without ransom, he fulfilled his promise in Tropea after receiving authorization from Rome.
