Tropea mayor defends city reputation amid restaurant fraud allegations
Tropea Mayor Giovanni Macrì has responded to allegations of fraudulent billing practices targeting foreign tourists in the coastal town’s restaurants. The controversy was sparked by Wlady Nigro, founder of Calabria Food Tour, who claimed on social media that some establishments were engaging in what he termed ‘the Italian scam.’
Nigro alleged that tourists were being charged for unconsumed items or amounts exceeding actual costs, often exploiting language barriers. While Nigro claimed to possess evidence from followers, he has not publicly released specific restaurant names or screenshots. In response, Mayor Macrì has demanded concrete proof and names, stating that legal action will be taken to protect the city’s reputation.
