Tropea secures €2.5 million for historic‑center elevator as council pushes live‑stream transparency

The Italian government’s Infrastructure‑Pnrr decree earmarks €2.5 million for the town of Tropea between 2027 and 2028 to build an elevator that will link the historic centre with the seafront, improving mobility for residents and tourists. The funding proposal was backed by Forza Italia deputy Annarita Patriarca for mayor Giovanni Macrì’s administration and has passed the budget commission, now awaiting plenary approval. Political tension surfaced when the Lega tried to force a commission of the aviation authority ENAC, but allied parties blocked the move.

At the same time, opposition councillors from the local “Insieme per Tropea” group demanded that the municipal council’s meetings be broadcast live online, stating that “transparency is not a favour to the opposition but a right of citizens.” They argue that live streaming would allow residents to follow debates on the agenda’s many technical and administrative measures and evaluate councillors’ positions directly.
