Tropical Butterfly Conservatory celebrates Butterfly Month in Srirangam

The Tropical Butterfly Conservatory (TBC) in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli, is observing September as ‘Butterfly Month’ through a series of educational and conservation initiatives. Organized by the Forest Department, the program aims to raise awareness among students and the public regarding butterfly habitats, ecological importance, and biodiversity conservation.

As part of the celebrations, lab-reared species including the Plain Tiger, Common Mormon, Common Emigrant, Blue Tiger, and Striped Tiger were released into the conservatory’s natural environment. The 25-acre facility, situated between the Cauvery and Kollidam rivers, hosts over 450 plant species and 131 butterfly species.

Students participated in various activities, such as ‘Butterfly Walks,’ where they learned to identify species by wing patterns and colors. Educational sessions also covered the four stages of the butterfly life cycle and the significance of host and nectar plants, such as Calotropis, Lemon, and Hibiscus.
