Tropical cyclone threat looms near El Salvador and Guatemala

A low-pressure system located in the Intertropical Convergence Zone southwest of El Salvador and the coasts of Guatemala has a 50% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within two days and a 90% chance within seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) warns that the system will drive significant moisture from the Pacific Ocean into Salvadoran territory. A new tropical wave expected on Sunday, September 27, is projected to reinforce the depression, maintaining atmospheric instability and heavy rainfall across coastal, volcanic, and eastern regions.

Due to high soil moisture levels, MARN has issued a vigilance warning for potential landslides, falling trees, and unstable structures. Maritime and fishing fleets have also been advised to monitor sea conditions due to accelerated winds and return currents.
