Tropical Cyclone Wati strikes southern Cook Islands
Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Wati has struck the southern Cook Islands, causing significant damage to infrastructure and coastal areas. The storm, which developed ahead of the official cyclone season, brought storm-force winds of 54 to 76 knots and heavy rainfall to the region.
Aitutaki has reported damage to its primary port, where approximately half of a newly upgraded $7 million causeway washed into the basin, leaving the Arutanga Harbour and Marina facility underwater. Aitutaki Mayor Nick Henry noted that the port's initial budget did not include steel sheet piling, which may have contributed to the vulnerability.
On Aitutaki, some homes lost power due to debris falling on overhead cables, and a coconut tree was reported to have fallen onto a roof. Emergency operations have transitioned to a 24/7 command post. The Cook Islands Meteorological Service has issued warnings for Aitutaki, Mauke, and Mangaia, citing risks of coastal inundation, heavy swells, and damaging winds.
