Typhoon No. 4 forms in North Gulf of Tonkin
A tropical depression in the North Gulf of Tonkin strengthened into Typhoon No. 4 on the afternoon of August 21. The typhoon is currently moving slowly in a northerly direction at approximately 3 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of level 8 (62-74 km/h) and gusts reaching level 10. Sea waves in the vicinity are expected to reach heights of 2 to 4 meters.
The National Steering Committee for Civil Defense has issued an urgent dispatch to seven ministries and 12 provinces, including Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, to prepare for potential flooding, landslides, and flash floods. Additionally, the Vietnam Aviation Management Corporation (VATM) has activated response plans for several northern airports, such as Noi Bai and Cat Bi, due to expected heavy rain, thunderstorms, and reduced visibility.
Heavy rainfall is forecasted to return to Northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa province, with some areas potentially receiving over 500 mm of rain. While the typhoon is predicted to move erratically and may eventually weaken or move toward the Chinese coast, the risk of significant weather impacts across the region remains high.
