Tropical Storm Dolly degrades to tropical wave, threatening Caribbean with heavy rain
Tropical Storm Dolly has degraded into an open tropical wave as it moves westward through the Atlantic. While it no longer maintains a closed circulation, its remnants continue to pose a weather threat to the Caribbean.
The National Hurricane Center reports that the system is moving at approximately 22 to 25 mph. Although it does not pose a direct threat to the Dominican Republic as a cyclone, its presence is expected to create atmospheric instability. The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) predicts that the system will act as a low-pressure area north of the country, bringing heavy rainfall between 50 and 75 millimeters from Sunday through Tuesday.
In response, the Dominican Emergency Operations Center (COE) has activated its contingency plan to prepare for potential flooding and to mobilize resources. Heavy rains and possible flash flooding are also expected to affect the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola over the coming days.
