Tropical Storm Gonzalo forms in the eastern Atlantic

Tropical Storm Gonzalo has formed in the eastern Atlantic, marking the seventh named storm of the 2026 season. The system is located approximately 305 kilometers southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving north-northwest at 13 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h.

Gonzalo is expected to pass near or over portions of the Cabo Verde Islands, bringing rainfall totals of 30 to 75 mm. Heavy rains are also anticipated along the coasts of Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal, with accumulations potentially reaching 50 to 100 mm. While the storm's trajectory brings it closer to the Canary Islands, it is currently expected to remain at a safe distance.

In the Atlantic, Gonzalo coexists with Tropical Storm Fay, marking the first time two tropical storms have been present simultaneously in the 2026 season. Both systems are forecasted to undergo gradual weakening in the coming days. For Mexico, both storms remain at a significant distance from the coast and pose no immediate threat to the territory.
