Hurricane Isaias threatens US Gulf Coast after strengthening

Tropical Storm Isaias is rapidly intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico and is projected to become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season. Forecasters expect the system to reach hurricane strength by Thursday and potentially intensify into a Category 2 hurricane by Friday before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast between late Friday and early Saturday.

Impact areas include the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi. Authorities have issued hurricane, tropical storm, and storm surge watches for the region. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 25 counties, while Alabama and Mississippi have also activated emergency measures. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in parts of Okaloosa County, Florida.

Potential hazards include damaging hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall of up to 10 inches in some areas, and life-threatening storm surges. In Mexico, the storm's presence is expected to bring heavy rains and increased wave heights to the Yucatan Peninsula and coastal regions of Veracruz and Tabasco, though a direct landfall in Yucatan is not currently projected.
