Tropilaelaps mite detection in Turkey threatens European bee health

The detection of the mite Tropilaelaps mercedesae in Artvin, northeastern Turkey, poses a significant threat to bee health in Europe. While Turkish authorities have not yet officially confirmed the presence, video footage released by the research association Phira-Science indicates a high level of infestation.

The geographical location is concerning due to previous reports of the mite in Georgia (2024) and Russia (2025), with potential presence in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. This finding suggests a progressive expansion of the mite toward the west.

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZS) has emphasized the need for strengthened early diagnosis, risk-based surveillance, and rapid response capabilities, particularly in countries along potential introduction routes. The National Reference Center for Apiculture at IZS delle Venezie is actively working to bolster diagnostic capacities and international technical exchange to manage this emerging threat.
