Troy Ancient City excavations uncover 2,800-year-old agora

Archaeological excavations at the Troy Ancient City in Çanakkale are uncovering a 2,800-year-old agora. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds a 5,000-year history of successive civilizations.

Prof. Dr. Reyhan Körpe, Deputy Head of the Troy Excavations, stated that the site is likely the oldest agora in Troy. The research, which has been ongoing since 2014, aims to understand the connection between the Bronze Age Troy and the Archaic-Classical period of Ilium. The findings suggest that a marketplace existed during the late Bronze Age and was revitalized by settlers who arrived approximately 80 to 90 years after the Bronze Age Troy was abandoned.

The excavations are led by Prof. Dr. Rüstem Aslan and coordinated by Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ) with permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and sponsorship from İÇDAŞ AŞ.
