Troy Jackson faces scrutiny over Maine tax and decriminalization policies

Maine Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Troy Jackson is facing scrutiny regarding his legislative record and proposed fiscal policies. Critics from Americans for Tax Reform argue that Jackson’s plan to scrap the payroll cap would result in a combined federal and state tax rate of 60.35% for Maine businesses and households. This proposal specifically targets small-to-midsized businesses and the self-employed, potentially increasing costs for pass-through entities.

In a separate legislative matter, Jackson played a key role in passing 2023 legislation that made Maine the first state to decriminalize selling sex. As president of the Maine Senate, Jackson voted for and signed the bill, which also updated state terminology regarding sex work. The measure faced opposition from the Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety, who cited concerns over law enforcement staffing shortages, as well as various advocacy groups with differing views on the nature of sex work.
