Troy Jackson faces scrutiny over tax votes and travel expenses

Maine Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Troy Jackson is facing scrutiny regarding his legislative voting record and past use of taxpayer funds. While his current campaign emphasizes affordability and lowering the cost of living, records show that as Maine’s assistant Senate majority leader, Jackson supported a $6.3 billion state budget in 2013 that included a 10% sales tax increase and a 14.3% increase in the meals and lodging tax.

Additionally, Jackson has faced questions regarding taxpayer-funded travel and lodging. Despite purchasing a home near the State House in Augusta in 2019, Jackson continued to identify Allagash as his permanent residence for legislative and electoral purposes. This arrangement, which allowed him to claim substantial travel reimbursements for the 300-mile distance between Augusta and Allagash, led to an ethics complaint in 2023. The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices ultimately voted unanimously to take no further action on the matter.
