Troy man faces aggravated hate crime charges after threatening Muslim men

A 79-year-old man is facing multiple charges of aggravated hate crime in Troy, Michigan, following an incident involving four Muslim men. According to Oakland County officials, the suspect confronted the men outside a library while they were discussing the Quran and Islam. The suspect allegedly expressed hatred toward Muslims and threatened to kill them, claiming to be armed with a handgun.

Police arrested the suspect and recovered a loaded pistol. While the individual claimed to have dementia and a history of declining mental health, authorities noted he is a concealed pistol license holder with 22 registered firearms. In response, Troy Police filed an Extreme Risk Protection Order to seize his weapons, resulting in the recovery of 19 firearms.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated that Islamophobia is unacceptable and that the victims were targeted for exercising their First Amendment rights. Aggravated hate crimes in the jurisdiction are punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a $15,000 fine.
