Três Lagoas: Man dies in police confrontation after violating protective order

A 37-year-old man, Jessé de Souza, died following a confrontation with Military Police in the Paranapungá neighborhood of Três Lagoas, Brazil, early Sunday morning. The incident began when a 70-year-old woman called the police after hearing noises at her door, suspecting her son had entered the residence despite an active judicial protective order prohibiting him from approaching her.

Police officers located Souza hiding in a bedroom. While officers were verifying the legal documents regarding the protective order, Souza reportedly grabbed a knife and charged at an officer. The police responded with gunfire, wounding him. Although officers attempted to rescue him by transporting him to Hospital Auxiliadora, he died shortly after arrival.

Authorities noted that Souza had a criminal history involving threats, theft, robbery, drug trafficking, and violation of protective orders. The incident has been registered as a violation of an urgent protective order and a death resulting from legal intervention by a state agent.
