TRT World Forum: Officials address algorithmic risks and AI development

At the TRT World Forum in Istanbul, Turkish officials raised concerns regarding the impact of algorithms and artificial intelligence on journalism, cultural identity, and social trust.

Communications Director Burhanettin Duran warned that algorithms are increasingly replacing human editorial judgment, creating a responsibility vacuum. He noted that while journalists spend weeks verifying news, algorithms determine visibility, often prioritizing provocative content over verified information. Duran emphasized that the control of digital platforms should remain in human hands to protect collective memory and cultural heritage.

Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır addressed the management of responsibility in the age of AI. He highlighted that while authority can be delegated to machines, responsibility cannot. Kacır announced that the first version of BİLGE, a Turkish large language model, will soon be released to developers to support domestic AI capabilities. He also outlined Turkey's 2026–2030 AI Action Plan, which aims to increase data center capacity and foster a robust research and industrial ecosystem.
