Truck accidents injure drivers in eastern and central France

A refrigerated truck veered off the road near Orbey in the Haut‑Rhin department on 31 July, falling ten metres into a rocky stream. The 64‑year‑old driver was trapped in the cabin, conscious but unable to be reached by medics. A specialist rescue unit and a rotating crane from Alsace Dépannage were deployed to free him, after which he was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The incident forced the closure of the RD48 between the Croix d’Orbey and Orbey.

In the early hours of 1 August, a 34‑year‑old security guard at a Grand Frais supermarket in Sainte‑Foy‑lès‑Lyon was crushed by a dump truck on the store’s parking lot. He suffered multiple fractures and was rushed to Lyon Édouard‑Herriot Hospital. The 61‑year‑old truck driver was arrested nearby and placed in custody on suspicion of attempted homicide, with toxicology tests pending.
