Truck assistance systems could prevent serious accidents, study finds
An analysis conducted by Dekra, Daimler Truck, and TU Dresden suggests that modern assistance systems in heavy goods vehicles could significantly reduce the severity or frequency of accidents involving vulnerable road users.
The study examined 75 serious accidents occurring between 2015 and 2024, all of which resulted in at least one serious injury or fatality. The research focused on collisions involving trucks and pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists.
Key findings include:
- For pedestrians, improved direct visibility could have mitigated consequences in 93 percent of cases, while departure warning systems showed a 94 percent potential for mitigation. - For cyclists, direct visibility offered protection in 80 percent of cases, and emergency braking assistants showed an 81 percent potential. - For motorcyclists, blind spot information systems were identified as highly relevant, with the potential to prevent serious or fatal injuries in 83 percent of the studied cases.
