Truck fire kills 53 calves on highway in Goiás, Brazil

A livestock transport truck carrying 53 calves burst into flames after the driver lost control and struck the roadside guardrail on the GO-112 highway near Nova Roma, Goiás, late on Saturday night. The impact is believed to have caused tire friction that ignited the vehicle, quickly engulfing the truck and the surrounding vegetation. All 53 calves were killed in the fire. Fire crews from the 10th Independent Company of the Military Firefighters of Goiás, assisted by forest‑fire units and a water tanker, worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent re‑ignition. The driver showed signs of intoxication, received medical treatment and was taken to the Civil Police for investigation. Authorities will examine the exact cause of the accident.
